Check out this introductory presentation about The Legacy Offset.
The biodiversity that sustains our life is still invisible to us. Time to change this.
The Legacy Offset allows anyone to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in a measurable way. And just as importantly, it allows anyone to verify the claims behind every restoration project.
How is the Legacy Offset transparent? Victoria is using a process called Decentralized Environmental Verification, or DEV for short. This is similar to what Google Maps does in taking basic data they collect (like satellite maps) but layering it with information anyone can add to, like a restaurant opening or closing or what its hours of operation are. Google’s technology to allow anyone to ‘tell’ Google Maps what they know, filter out bad information, and create an ultra-reliable system anyone can use dramatically changed how easy it is to travel or explore new places. It created trust and let you worry about where you wanted to go, rather than whether or not the destination currently exists or if it would be open. That’s what Victoria is doing with DEV and the environment. Victoria is using a combination of teams doing regenerative improvements to the land and observations by anyone -everyone- to make sure that the data underlining every Legacy Offset is accurate in real time.
